About This Map

I’m Josh, and I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2003. At the time, there were almost no gluten-safe restaurants for extremely sensitive celiacs. I’ve created this map because I’m a small-business owner and often find myself on the road when I’m hungry.

Quickly finding a safe, nearby gluten free restaurant in Portland can be difficult. Making it harder is that I love to eat out at new places and tend to forget where is safe and isn’t (thanks, brain fog!).

Using this map, I can always find a close place to eat that won’t make me sick.

How did I decide what places to put on the gluten free map?

Pretty simple: I’ve eaten there and haven’t been sick.

I wish there was an easier way, but the only thing has ever worked for me was hearing that someone else has eaten at a restaurant. I hope this map helps you.

Being celiac, I have to avoid restaurants that allow cross-contamination amongst their foods. Gluten free food contains no gluten proteins. This is very different from wheat-free, which regularly has trace amounts of gluten. If you’re like me, you’ve regularly been glutened by restaurants that talk a good talk, but can’t keep their food clean or just don’t understand how stringent preparation processes need to be for celiacs.

What Do The Colors Mean?

Blue-Marker

Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurant

Restaurant has told me that there are no (0, zip, zilch) gluten ingredients on the premises.

Red-Marker

No Cross Contamination

The restaurant uses few gluten ingredients and/or it does a good job keeping gluten out of GF dishes (separate workspaces, utensils, or similar).

Please Note

I have visited the restaurants I list on this web, and they have not made me sick. But you’re different, and you may not feel the same after visiting the same restaurants. Plus, sometimes restaurants that are otherwise very careful make mistakes. This web site is not medical advice and is not intended as such. You should do your own research.

However, I stay in touch with other celiacs in Portland, and I won’t include restaurants where I’ve felt fine but others have not.
